In her professional time in the sport, de Groot won over 10 Grand Slam tournaments including back to back women’s singles tournaments at Wimbledon from 2017 until 2018. in 2019, de Groot completed her Career Grand Slam when she took the singles title in the 2019 French Open. Her singles victory during the French Open also made de Groot the first wheelchair tennis player to achieve the grand slam that was not calendar year. De Groot made her first Grand Slam appearance at the 2017 Australian Open. After reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the 2017 French Open, de Groot was awarded her debut Grand Slam title at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. The 2017 season ended with de Groot winning the Grand Slam tournaments with a top-four finish during the 2017 US Open. In the beginning of 2018 she was the winner of her first title at the Australian Open and appeared at the final of the 2018 French Open. In the final Grand Slams in 2018, De Groot won the women’s singles title in the 2017 Wimbledon Championships and her first US Open singles title at the 2018 US Open. In this year’s French Open, de Groot ended her first career Grand Slam when she won her first French Open singles title. The French Open title also made de Groot the first wheelchair tennis player to win the non- calendar season Grand Slam (win all four Grand Slam singles events in consecutive years but not all within one year). In the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, de Groot finished her back-to-back singles victories after she was defeated in the final by Aniek Van Koot during the championship final.
Doubles-wise, De Groot was a third place finisher at her 2017 Australian, French and Wimbledon championships. Following her win at her very first Doubles Championships in the US Open, she lost at the 2018 Australian Open and co-won the doubles title during the 2018 French Open. De Groot became the first wheelchair tennis player to win both female singles event and the doubles tournament in Wimbledon in July, 2018. She took home the second US Open doubles title at the 2018 US Open alongside Yui Kamiji. In the 2019 Australian Open, De Groot was awarded the first Australian doubles title alongside Aniek van Koot. She also won her singles title at the beginning of January in 2019. The following Grand Slams De Groot and Van Koot were the winners of the Doubles title at both Wimbledon, the French Open and Wimbledon.

De Groot was born with uniform leg lengths and began her wheelchair tennis journey at seven years old. She began taking part in the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour in 2009 as an amateur player. In her time with the ITF, De Groot won the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in 2013 both in doubles and singles. In the next year, she was awarded in 2014 the Junior Masters in doubles.
In addition to those Grand Slam tournaments, De Groot participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in singles and doubles events. Although De Groot did not medal in singles competition, she took home an Olympic silver medal for women’s doubles. For Masters events, De Groot won the 2017 and 2018 Wheelchair Tennis Masters in women’s singles. In doubles competition she was crowned in 2016 the Wheelchair Doubles Masters with Lucy Shuker and the 2017 Wheelchair Doubles Masters alongside Marjolein Buis. She also played in the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in consecutive years , from 2011 until 2019. In the World Team Cup, De Groot was a rookie in 2011, before becoming as a member of the world team in 2012.
