Didier Seeuws (born 1 August 1965) is a Belgian civil official and diplomat, who was named by the European Union (EU) to be the head of a special task force to deal with the UK’s departure from the EU.

The 1st of December, 2014 Seeuws has been appointed Director for Transport, Telecommunications and Energy within the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union This was the same day as Donald Tusk replacing Van Rompuy as the President of the European Council. Seeuws was succeeded by Jiri Burianek who was the Secretary General of European Committee of the Regions. In June of 2016, Seeuws was appointed as the head of a specific internal task force that was created to ensure the smooth working of EU institutions following the UK’s departure of the European Union (‘Brexit’) which the British voters voted on during their EU referendum on June 23rd 2016. Martin Selmayr, the Head of the Cabinet of Presidency of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker was said to dismiss Seeuws’ appointment as an attempt to “power grab” by the European Council. A European Commission official told Politico that “Martin dismissed it as a ridiculous move.”

In June of 2011, Dirk Wouters was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Belgium to the EU to replace de Ruyt. Since Belgian tradition did not permit both positions in the representation to be performed by Flemings Seeuws was designated as the special counsellor for Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council. This created him as “the right-hand man to Frans Van Daele” who was in charge of Van Rompuy’s private office. Olivier Belle was appointed to succeed Seeuws as the Deputy Permanent Representative for Belgium. The year 2012 was the time that Seeuws was appointed to replace Van Daele as the Chief of Staff (chef de cabinet) of the office of the private Presidency of the European Council, Van Rompuy.
