His father, who was from Brittany was working as a medical doctor in the military and his mother, originally from Marseille was an assistant nurse. The family moved back to France in the year 1961 and moved to Marseille. For a while the boy was educated in Nice before he went to the boarding school of Briancon.
The year 2006 was the time when Raoult along with four of his co-authors was disqualified for a period of one period of one year for publishing their work in journal of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) after a peer reviewer from Infection and Immunity discovered that four of the figures in the revised manuscript for a paper on a mouse model of Typhus had the same design as those in the original manuscript although they were meant to be from an entirely different study. In the aftermath, Raoult “resigned from the editorial board of two other ASM journals, canceled his membership in the American Academy of Microbiology, ASM’s honorific leadership group, and banned his lab from submitting to ASM journals”. As a response to Science publishing the report at the time, in 2012, Raoult claimed that “I did not manage the paper and did not even check the last version”. The paper was later published in another journal.
Since 2008, Raoult has been the director of the Unité de Recherche sur les Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales Emergentes, (URMITE; in English, Infectious and Tropical Emergent Diseases Research Unit), which employs more than 200 people.
He was awarded the “Grand prix de l’Inserm” in 2010; Raoult was awarded the “Grand Prix scientifique de la Fondation Louis D.” of the Institut de France in 2015; he shared the €450,000 prize with biologist Chris Bowler from the Institut de Biologie de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris; the bacteria genus Raoultella was named in his honor.

Didier Raoult (born on 13 March 1952) is a French microbiologist and doctor who specializes on infectious disease. The year 1984 was the time Raoult established his own Rickettsia Unit at Aix-Marseille University (AMU). In addition, he teaches infectious diseases at AMU’s Faculty of Medicine of Aix- Marseille University. From 2008 onwards, Raoult is the Director of Unite de Recherche sur les Maladies Infectieuses et Tropicales Emergentes. Raoult gained a lot of attention worldwide throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by promoting the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat the disease.
In 1972, he passed his baccalaureate in literature as a non-paying candidate, and was accepted into the medical school in Marseille. As a believer in the family tradition in medical practice, Raoult senior refused to pay for his studies in any other field. Raoult had hoped to be an Obstetrician upon having passed the exam, but this option was rejected because he failed to make the required grade on the Internship exam. Instead, he was a specialist in infectious diseases following in the footsteps that his grandfather Paul Legendre (1854-1936)

As of 2008, he was “classified among the ten leading French researchers by the journal Nature, for the number of his publications (a credit of more than two thousand) and for his citations number”. In 2014, according to ISI Web of Knowledge, he is the most cited microbiologist in Europe, and the seventh worldwide.
