In 1995, aged 37, he founded the top French gay and lesbian monthly magazine Tetu which he co-founded with the assistance by Pascal R. Loubet. The magazine is funded through Pierre Berge, of Yves Saint Laurent fame and managed under the direction of Thomas Doustally, its editor in chief, Tetu is the most popular gay publication in Europe. In 2008, Doustally quit Tetu and overhauled the magazine in the year following the launch of the website Minorites.org along with other reporters Laurent Chambon from Netherlands and Mehmet Koksal, a native of Belgium. He is the editor in chief of the Minorites’ weekly newsletter. The goal for Minorites is to bring together issues pertaining to minorities from around the globe.
In 2000, Lestrade published his first book, Act Up, une Histoire (Denoël), a personal history of the first eleven years of Act Up-Paris. This was followed by Kinsey 6 (Denoël, 2002), an intimate cultural and sexual diary of the eighties, during the time he published Magazine. His next book was The End (Denoël, 2004), a fierce and controversial essay on the failure of AIDS prevention, and the phenomenon of barebacking in France. Lestrade left Paris in 2002 to live in rural French Normandy, near Alençon. He has always been a nature lover and a garden enthusiast. The following book, Cheikh, journal de campagne, was published in 2007 by Flammarion and related his five years of loneliness in the countryside after leaving Paris, influenced by the work of Henry David Thoreau. For this purpose, he travelled to Concord, Massachusetts, and visited Walden Pond. His fifth book, Chroniques du dance floor, Libération 1988–1999 is published in May 2010 by “l’éditeur Singulier”. Lestrade has been featured in the 2006–07 edition of Who’s Who in France.
After leaving Têtu, Didier Lestrade tried to focus his writing on Internet, as most of his articles during the last two decades can’t be found online. He opened his blog which has been considered by French GQ website as one of the twenty most influential blogs. In 2010, he started his own website. This site is dedicated to archives from his career as a journalist, on topics like music, photography, AIDS activism and gay porn.
It was in the year 1986 that the magazine ended its existence after conducting over 90 long interviews, each of English and French as well as David Hockney, Bronski Beat, Brion Gysin, Divine, Gilbert & George, Bill Ward (British artist) and Tom of Finland. The magazine also was a prominent source for the most cutting-edge European as well as American male photography at the time, and featured vintage works by Pierre et Gilles, Patrick Sarfati, Erwin Olaf, and Paul Blanca, Stanley Stellar and many others. In 1989, aged 31 He shifted his focus on AIDS activism, and established his first French Chapter of ACT UP with close friends and journalists Pascal R. Loubet and Luc Coulavin. He was president of the Act Up- Paris chapter during the first three crucial years. In 1992, he was a part of an important part in the creation of TRT-5 [fr] which was a group of the most prominent French AIDS organisations. TRT-5 was in its forefront in AIDS treatment and Lestrade was among its leaders until 2002. In 2000, Lestrade shifted from treating issues to AIDS prevention. It was a prominent advocate against barebacking. He also confronted the pioneering author Guillaume Dustan.
