Didier Awadi Biography

Didier Awadi is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on August 11, 1969 in Dakar, Dakar Region, Senegal. Born on the 11th of August 1969, in Dakar, Senegal, Awadi is from Beninese in addition to Cape Verdean descent. In 1984, when hip-hop was just beginning to appear in the Dakar scene, Awadi created the group Syndikat. Then, in 1989, the group created Positive Black Soul with fellow hip-hop musician Duggy Tee, with the intention to promote positive images of Africa. It was in the year 1992 that PBS got the attention of French rapper of Senegalese roots, MC Solaar, to become the first segment of his tour across France. As the show gained more and more popularity, they released in 1994 their first single “Boul Faale,” (“Don’t worry”) in which they decried the corruption that is a part of their local government. The track was later included on their debut album “Salaam” released in 1995 following an European tour. They signed the album under the label Island Records. In the following 14 months, PBS had multiple international collaborations (KRS-One, Mc Solaar, Princess Erika K-Mel Kimani Marley and more.) and performed all over the world while release K7 and CDs in Senegal and around the world. Through his entire career, first as a part of PBS and later, as an independent artist, Awadi articulated a militant and critical argument in favor of a better, more inclusive pan-African future.

In 2001, the two PBS members of PBS made the decision to launch solo career. The following year, Awadi released his first solo album, “Kaddu Gor” (“Word of Honour”) which was nominated for the Radio France Internationale (RFI) World Music Award in 2003. Following the announcement of his new band PBS-Radikal, which included Baay Sooley Carlou D and Noumounda Cissoko Awadi joined Sony Music. He debuted an album with his first solo artist “Un Autre Monde est Possible” (“Another World is possible”) with which he pleaded for the development of a more equitable society built on fairness, equity justice, freedom, and equity. He also debuted “Sunugaal”, a plea for the growth of Senegal and for a halt to illegal immigration. The album was released in October 2007. Awadi announced his new project “Presidents of Africa” at the Bataclan (theatre) stage in Paris along with musicians from all over Africa. The fourth album was released in April of this year.

Awadi began his career in 1998. Awadi was able to contribute to Dakar’s music industry through the construction of his home studio, “Taf-Taf Production” (“quickly” in Wolof however “well-done” as Awadi stresses) and the first rental of his PA system. Awadi, in 2001 created an hour-long television show that mirrors the local hip-hop culture, “Senerap”. He also conceived an annual festival dedicated to hip-hop culture “Senerap International”. In the is the year “Taf-Taf Production” became “Studio Sankara”, a more formal and professional music production company that was actively producing commercials. In 2009, in an initiative in collaboration with hip hop professionals and music industry artists, Awadi held the first ever edition of “72H Hip Hop”, the three-day celebration of Hip Hop Galsen through workshops and performances, conferences, and exhibits.
