Dick Lehr (born May 3 1954) is an American journalist, author and professor of journalism of journalism at Boston University. He is the co-author of The New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and an Devil’s Deal, and its sequel, Whitey: The Life of America’s Most Famous Mob Boss along with co-journalist Gerard O’Neill.

It was in the month of May that Black Mass was released in May 2000, which he also co-authored alongside O’Neill. Drawing on their research on Spotlight Team, Spotlight Team, Black Mass described the secret relationships between Boston crime lord James “Whitey” Bulger and FBI special agent John Connolly. The book was an New York Times bestseller and received it the Edgar Award for best fact crime. In 2015 , the Black Mass film version Black Mass premiered, with Johnny Depp playing the role of Whitey Bulger, and Benedict Cumberbatch playing Whitey’s brother Bill Bulger. In the film, Lehr makes a cameo as a customer at the restaurant.

Lehr left the Globe in 2003 and became a professor of journalism at Boston University College of Communication.

In June, 2009, Lehr published his first solo project, The Fence: A Police Cover-up Along Boston’s Racial Divide published by HarperCollins, a non- fiction narrative about the police beating of Michael Cox, an officer working in plainclothes who was mistaken for a fleeing murder suspect. It was the worst known case of police brutality in Boston history. The Fence was an Edgar Award finalist for best non-fiction, and Fox Searchlight Pictures is developing a motion picture based on the book, with Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos co-writing the screenplay.

Lehr was awarded a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford from 1991 to 1992. From 1985 to 2003 the reporter was at The Boston Globe, where he was Legal Affairs reporter for the Globe, magazine editor and feature writer, as well as a long-time participant in The Spotlight Team, an investigative reporting unit. He was an Pulitzer Prize finalist in investigative reporting. He was a Visiting Journalist-in-Residence at The Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University in 2007.
