Pillay is an outstanding faculty member in Pretoria’s University of Pretoria and has been a visiting professor in The University of Seattle, New York University as well as The University of Oxford and the Open University. She was recognized as an activist for human rights through Amnesty International’s Durban section of Amnesty International in 2005.

Pillay was appointed an official member in the Labour Court in 2000 and of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in 2010. She backed the Judge President Chiman Patel, who was later removed because of suspicions that he had fallen out with the KwaZuluNatal political establishment over the race war about his appointment.

Dhayanithie “Dhaya” Pillay (born 5 January 1958 in Durban) is a South African judge of the Labour Court and KwaZulu-Natal High Court.

In the latter half of the 1980s Pillay’s work shifted towards labor law, and she became an expert and obtained the LLM in the area of labour law from University of Natal in 1993. Pillay was a drafter for the Labour Relations Act and later became a senior CCMA commissioner. She was also adviser to authors for the South African Constitution.

In July 2015 she was interviewed and shortlisted by the Judicial Service Commission for appointment to the Constitutional Court of South Africa. She was nominated by rights groups and former Constitutional Court judge Zak Yacoob and was praised by commentators.
