She was the fourth child of five born into a strict Christian family. Growing up in a family that was active in music, she decided to take the stage to sing, and later performed backing vocals to artists like Chrisye. After graduating from high school, she went to Parahyangan Catholic University and graduated with an international relations degree. When she graduated in 1993, she started her group, the girls RSD (Rida Sita Dewi) together with her pals Rida Farida, and Sita Nursanti. Together the group released 3 albums as well as the greatest hits album released on Warna Musik and Sony Music.
A few years after, Dee released Rectoverso, the “hybrid” of an album and a collection of short stories. The album was first released in 2006 when she composed the track “Hanya Isyarat” (“Only a Sign”) and she was not satisfied, and created a short story based on an “same theme and inspiration” and, from this seemingly distinct yet “actually one and complementary” arrangement, she came up with the name. A song from the album, “Malaikat Juga Tahu” (“Angels Also Know”) it came out as single, receiving a enthusiastic reception. The same year, she also had the novel Perahu Kertas (Paper Boats) published.
Dee married Marcell Siahaan, a fellow singer; together they have a son. They sometimes collaborated on writing songs. However, in 2008 they divorced; later that year Dee married holistic healer Reza Gunawan. In 2009 the couple announced their first child, who was born through an unassisted home birthing procedure.
In 2011 Dee released another collection, Madre (Mother), which was inspired by her hobby of cooking; madre is also a kind of yeast used in cooking. The following year she released the fourth installment in her Supernova series, Partikel. During the writing process she researched various themes, including shamanism, ethnobotany, entheogen, crop circles and extraterrestrials. In an interview with The Jakarta Post, she said that in writing the book she had voice her “concerns about the environment, such as the destructive course we are taking and the future of humanity on this planet”.
Dee is a student for yoga, meditation and yoga. She has been vegetarian since the year 2006.

in 2001 Dee published her debut novel Kesatria, Putri dan Bintang Jatuh (The Knight, The Princess, and the Falling Star). It was part of the Supernova series it was well-received and led to two sequels: Supernova: Akar (Supernova: Roots) and Petir (Thunder). Two of them have been nominated to the Khatulistiwa Award, and so was one of the sequels in 2003.
In March 2006, Dee release Filosofi Kopi: Kumpulan Cerita and Prosa Satu Dekade (Coffee Philosophy: A Decade Worth of Stories and Prose). The collection of short stories and prose dealt with themes of love and spirituality and was described by literary critic and poet Goenawan Mohamad as being “Uncomplicated, in fact quite brilliant…” Mohamad went on to suggest that it would revive “wit” in Indonesian literature. At the same time, she released her first solo album, Out of Shell; the album had been in development since 1994.
