DeWayne Allison Buice (born August 20th 1957) was the former relief pitching professional. Buice played for two seasons for the California Angels and half a season with the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). Buice officially announced his retirement and played in his last game on the 27th of June in 1989. He continued to play in minor leagues until the early 2000s, primarily for teams for which there was an ownership stake.

The company he founded was known as Upper Deck. The glossy cards were adorned with Holograms to prevent counterfeiting. There would be a massive interest in the card. Tom Geideman, one of the first employees of Upper Deck who was in charge of selecting the players to appear on the card set referred to it as the game’s most famous gold card. At the time Buice was retired from professional football at the close of the 1989 season Buice had earned $2.8 million. Buice believed that he due a lot more, and the lawsuit was filed against Upper Deck executives. After a dispute over his ownership stake in the company concluded by the courts, he was reported to have realized $17 million through the deal.

Buice is one of the founding managers of The Upper Deck trading cards company who held the position from 1988 until 2000. Buice was in the city of Yorba Linda, California one evening in November 1987 trying to find a specific Chinese restaurant within the vicinity, and after scouring the area but without success, he walked to a store selling baseball cards named “The Upper Deck” to inquire from the staff member whether he knew the location of the restaurant.

Buice entered into a four-year contract with the company. After the strike in 1994/95 was resolved, Upper Deck gave Buice six more years of ownership in the form of a contract extension. De Wayne Buice never worked for Upper Deck. Buice made the contact between Hemrick and the-then de facto commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, which earned Buice a twelve percent stake in the company. Buice earned $27 million, far more than his short MLB career brought him.
