After having seen one of the operas he first saw in Hamburg beginning in 1972. The Magic Flute, followed by Die Soldaten, he has stated that from the very first time he fell in love with opera. It was through Henze’s invitation that Glanert created his first large piece of music theatre and the first opera, Leyla und Medjun which opened the inaugural Munich Biennale, set up by Henze in 1988. Glanert later became involved in the festival of Henze which was the Cantiere Internazionale del Arte in Montepulciano initially as assistant coordinator and then the head of the school of music between 1989 and 1993 and then re-joining as artistic director from between 2009 and 2011.

Glanert talked about his musical influences in an interview in 1996. After an initial period of three years when he submerged his own musical personality under that of Henze, he developed his own style between the contrasting poles of Gustav Mahler and Maurice Ravel – Mahler for his structural perspective, “the simple, the dramatic sense of the music”, and Ravel for his surface textures, “the artificial masquerade of sounds”.
