Walker was chosen to the San Diego Chargers in the sixth round (163rd overall selection) in the 90 NFL Draft. Walker was the Chargers their first tight end of the season from 1990 until 1993. Walker played for 60 times, and 55 as the starter and caught 98 of the balls for 979 yards, four of which were touchdowns.

After retiring from football, Walker lived in West Bloomfield, Michigan. In 2007, he was hired as a sports broadcaster for the Big Ten Network. He was married to Rhonda Walker, a news anchor on Detroit’s WDIV-TV, but the two later divorced.

In July 2012, Walker sued the NFL alleging that the league failed to warn him about the risk of football-related concussions.

In his junior year, Walker started two games one at tight end, and another in split-end. When he was a senior Walker was a captain and played every game as a tight-end for the Michigan Wolverines football team that recorded a record of 10-2 during Schembechler’s final year as the Michigan’s coach. In the final stretch of the season of 1989 Walker got selected to be the tight end of the first team on the team of the Big Ten conference’s All-Big 10 football squad. He was able to catch 33 passes for 5 touchdowns and 446 yards during his stint at Michigan.

Derrick Norval Walker (born June 23rd 1997) is an ex- American footballer. He played in the NCAA football tournament for the University of Michigan as a inside linebacker and tight-end from 1986 until 1989. He was a professional footballer as a tight-end in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers (1990-1993) as well as The Kansas City Chiefs (1994-1997) and the Oakland Raiders (1998).

Walker was enrolled as a student at The University of Michigan in 1985 and played for Bo Schembechler, the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football teams from 1986 until 1989. After being redshirted in 1985, Walker was a defensive linebacker spot in the year 1986. He switched to tight end by 1987. He received Michigan’s Frederick Matthei award.

Walker joined the Kansas City Chiefs for the 1994 NFL season. In four seasons with the Chiefs from 1994 to 1997, Walker appeared in 58 games, 28 as a starter, and caught 75 passes for 720 yards and four touchdowns. He concluded his playing career with the Oakland Raiders during the 1998 NFL season. He appeared 11 games, three as a starter, for the Raiders and caught seven passes for 71 yards.
