He later was a part of Dunfermline Athletic where he was an integral part of Dunfermline Athletic’s most memorable times from the time that were George Farm in the late 1960s. Young was a part of the Scottish Cup Final defeat against Celtic in 2004(alongside his brother Darren) and also losing to the same team during the 2006 Scottish League Cup Final. Then he briefly played for St Johnstone before spending most of the 2006-07 season on the side of Partick Thistle.

Young was signed by Queen of the South during the summer transfer window in 2012. Young played as Queen of the South in their penalty shootout victory of 4-3 over Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final at Ibrox. He also scored in the event that Queens took their 2013 Scottish Challenge Cup Final that season against Partick. After having already won both the 2012-13 Scottish Second Division title by significant margins and this earned Young as well as his team an opportunity to double as league and cup winners.

After the departure of Grindavik, Young was offered an extension of his contract for the remainder of 2011 from Greenock Morton, but was ineligible to take on Livingston because of suspension. This was only revealed after Morton was granted international clearance by the Icelandic FA. His contract was signed in November, along with Dominic Cervi’s loan contract. Then, in January of 2012 Young received a deal extension from Allan Moore until the end of the season. The contract was accepted and signed on January 6th. Young was let go by Morton at the conclusion this season because of problems transferring from Aberdeen to Aberdeen for training.

Derek Young (born 27 May 1980) is a Scottish former professional association football player. Young began his career with the older brother Darren at Aberdeen but he left with his brother after 2003, to move to Dunfermline Athletic. A few stints in St Johnstone and Partick Thistle followed, before returning to Aberdeen for a further four years. He stayed for a brief time on the island of Iceland together with Grindavik and then returned to Scotland together with Morton in the year 2011. In the summer of 2012, he joined Queen of the South with whom he achieved two cup and league titles. He signed with Forfar Athletic in 2014 before finishing his career with a stint at Formartine United.

Young returned to Aberdeen in July 2007 when he joined Aberdeen. Similar to his previous stint Young was again a participant in UEFA competition against teams like that of Atletico Madrid. In April of 2011 the manager of Aberdeen informed him Aberdeen director Craig Brown that his contract was not renewed for the next season. In July of 2011, he joined with Icelandic side Grindavik.

Young moved to Forfar Athletic in June 2014, spending two season with the Station Park club before signing for Highland League club Formartine United in July 2016.
