Derek Daly is one of the most popular and richest Formula One Driver who was born on March 11, 1953 in Ballinteer, Ireland. Derek Patrick Daly (born 11 March 1953) is an American-born Irish racing driver. Daly won his first championship in 1977, the British Formula 3 Championship, and was an official racing driver for 17 years in the 64 World Championship Formula One Grands Prix which began on the 2nd April, 1978. He earned a total of 15 championship points. He was also a part of a number of non-championship Formula One races.

He also was involved in ESPN Speedworld Coverage of the Grand Prix of San Marino in 1994. This race was named the race in which Ayrton Senna died.

Daly’s niece, Nicola Daly, is an Ireland women’s field hockey international and was a member of the squad that won the silver medal at the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup. She also works as a data engineer for Juncos Racing.

In 2018, Daly was fired from a racing analyst position he had at WISH-TV because of a racial slur he had made 35 years before. During the outage aftermath, his son Conor was set to make his NASCAR debut at Road America on August 25, 2018 before his sponsor (Lilly Diabetes) pulled out due to the comments, even though Conor was not born for another 8 years after the fact.

After gaining experience through his participation in the Irish Formula Ford Championship, Daly took his first turn during Formula Two in the European Formula Two Championship in 1977. Between 1978 and 1979 Daly competed with Formula Two and Formula Two and Formula One which saw him finish 3rd at Formula Two in the Formula Two championship in both seasons. From 1980 until 1982, the focus was on Formula One, his best year coming in the year 1980, where he won two fourth-place finishes and was 11th in the Drivers’ Championship.

Daly began racing in 1982. Daly started racing in the CART series, which continued until 1989. Daly took part in at 66 CART races, which included each Indianapolis 500 from 1983-1989, apart from 1986. He placed in the top ten of the field a total of 21 times, which included three podium finishes, including 3rd place, at Milwaukee the year 1987. In September 1984, he nearly killed in a terrible crash during the CART PPG Detroit News Grand Prix 200 race at Michigan International Speedway. The front of his car was cut off, and he sustained multiple injuries, including a broken left ankle, a double compound fractures to the left fibula and left tibia, broken left hip socket and pelvis that was severely fractured, numerous broken ribs on the left side and a broken hand on the left. 3rd degree burns on the left arm dislocated right foot as well as ankle, deep abrasions , and soft tissue in the heel of the right and internal bleeding.

Daly’s son, Conor Daly, is also a racing driver, starting in GP3 driving for the Lotus GP team in 2012, and then continuing on to GP2 in 2014 driving for Venezuela GP Lazarus, and then IndyCar, starting part-time in 2013 and full- time in 2016.
