Deon John Burton, born 25 October 1976, is a former professional footballer and football coach. He is currently the Under-23’s Assistant manager of Championship club West Bromwich Albion. He was a member of many English football clubs, including Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth. He represented Jamaica at international events, including the 1998 World Cup. In 1997, he was named Jamaican Sportsman-of-the Year.

Burton was again unsuccessful in establishing a starting position at Derby. He played intermittently at the club with loans to Stoke in February 2002 and Portsmouth in August 2002. After breaking a bone in his foot in September, he returned to Derby and signed for Portsmouth in December 2002. Portsmouth was promoted at the conclusion of the season. Burton was able to stay briefly at Portsmouth but was unable to establish an initial role. He was loaned out to Walsall Town and Swindon Town where he scored against Wycombe Wanderers. He signed for Brentford in July 2004, and played for them during the 2004-05 season. His top scorer was against Sheffield Wednesday.

He went on to play a crucial part in Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship survival and returned to play against his old club Derby County on the final day of the 2005–06 season, captaining the Wednesday side to a 2–0 victory with another former Ram, Marcus Tudgay, scoring the first goal.

In July 2005 he joined Rotherham United on a free transfer, signing a contract for two years. After scoring 14 goals in the first half of the season, including a hat-trick in a 4–0 victory against Blackpool, Burton put in a transfer request in December 2005.

Former Portsmouth manager Jim Smith signed Burton in 1997 for Premier League club Derby County. This was a PS1 million deal.

Burton was born in Reading, Berkshire. He began his professional career at Portsmouth in 1993-94, where he played in two games. Over the next three seasons, Burton played intermittently for Portsmouth and scored the goal that kept them in the First Division with a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town on May 26, 1996.

Burton made his debut on the Jamaican national team in the final stages of the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He ended with four goals in five games. This feat earned him the Jamaican Sportsman of Year Award. It was almost the single thing that brought the country to the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. He did not score in France. He was also present in all of Jamaica’s games, as they placed fourth in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, he did not score. He was also part of the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad, and was included again on the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster.

He was included in the qualifying squad for the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, making substitute appearances but was dropped from the squad after qualification.

Burton joined Championship side Charlton Athletic on loan on 27 November 2008 with a view to a permanent move, Wednesday manager Brian Laws citing Burton’s poor start to the 2008–09 season for the move as well as not being able to give the player assurances over his long-term future at Hillsborough. On 2 January 2009, Burton was named as a permanent Charlton player, joining the club on a free transfer.
