Debra Saunders-White (January 8 1957 – November 26 16th, 2016,) served as the 11th chancellor at North Carolina Central University. She was appointed in June 1st, 2013 she was also the very first female to be appointed to the post of chancellor on a permanent basis at NCCU. She previously served as Deputy Director of higher Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education.

In May of 2011, Saunders-White began serving as the deputy assistant secretary for higher education programs within the Department of Education and left in 2013 following her appointment to the position of 11th chancellor for North Carolina Central University. NCCU is a publicly owned historically black institution located within Durham, NC. The Chancellor Saunders-White was appointed to NCCU the 1st of June, 2013, and was officially installed on April 4 2014. Dr. Saunders-White was a student of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

in 2006 Saunders-White was dismissed from Hampton University to become vice- chancellor of Information Technology at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. While at UNCW she also worked within the Office of Institutional Diversity as the interim associate provost as well as Chief Diversity Officer.

Saunders White was born in Hampton, Virginia. She received a bachelor’s diploma in the field of history at the University of Virginia in 1979 and a master’s degree in administrative studies in 1993 from the College of William and Mary in 1993. Saunders-White earned the doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration at George Washington University in 2004.

Saunders-White died on November 26, 2016 from complications of kidney cancer at the age of 59.
