When she worked in the inner city of Boston she pioneered efforts to define the issue of youth violence as a health concern. She created the Education for Violence Prevention in Adolescents. an early model for education programs for prevention of violence in schools and also collaborated on Deadly Consequences (HarperCollins 1991); Murder Is No Accident (Jossey Bass Publishers 2004); Sugar and Spice and No Longer Nice, (Jossey Bass Publishers 2005) and a high school textbook Health (Pearson 2014) as well as more than 100 papers. In 1987 the Governor Michael Dukakis appointed her Commissioner of Public Health for Massachusetts where she headed a department that had more than 3,500 employees, eight hospitals, and the budget was $350 million. Her family was in Tanzania during her husband’s time as U.S. Ambassador. Dr. Prothrow-Stith graduated from Spelman College and Harvard Medical School and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 2003 she was selected to the highly prestigious National Academy of Medicine. She has been awarded the honor of receiving ten doctorates, and in 2017 she was awarded Woman of the Year in the LA County Board of Supervisors.
The year was 1991 when she wrote Deadly Consequences: How Violent Violence is Destroying our Teenage Population and a Strategy for Finding Solutions, which was the first book in the field of literature to discuss violence from a public health angle for a large public. Following her completion of her residency in medicine in 1982 the doctor. Prothrow-Stith began to study the issue of violence as a health risk and decided that the best solution to the problem was to implement an education strategy for the public that has been used to decrease smoking cigarettes as well as drunk driving. While she was Commissioner, she set up the very first Office of Violence Prevention in a public department in the state of health, expanded programs for prevention for HIV/AIDS, and expanded rehab and treatment for addiction.
