At 14 she started playing guitar, writing songs as well as performing throughout New Jersey and New York City. She performed several times on the Izzy Young Folk Show on WBAI and in 1969, her song “When I Hear About War” was released within Broadside magazine. She was a student at an institution called the New Lincoln School in New York City (Grades 11-12) where she was a student of Philip Corner and Cathy MacDonald as well as taking lessons in Mannes School of Music. In 1988, Deborah sang “Come To Me” from the film Fright Night Part 2. Deborah also contributed her voice to the I.R.S. Music collection Just In Time For Christmas (1990) by composing the track “It Only Comes Once a Year”.
She has scored five films, including Circuitry Man, and has had two collaborations with Stewart Copeland used in films; “Heaven is a Place” in the 1991 movie Highlander II: The Quickening, and “For One Moment” in the 1992 television movie Afterburn.
After receiving a master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles, Holland joined the faculty, running the Master’s in Commercial Music program from 1998 to 2010.

In 1977, Holland relocated in 1977 to Los Angeles to pursue her career. In 1996, she was the first person to obtain an advanced degree from Commercial Music from California State University, Los Angeles and in 1997 she joined the faculty, running the master’s degree of Commercial Music from 1998-2010.

Holland received an audition to become the lead singer and songwriter for Animal Logic, after a two-song demo tape that was sent to Police drummer Stewart Copeland by publisher Dan Howell. She was picked from among the hundreds of singers who auditioned to join the group. Holland has been credited with writing the majority of the songs performed by the group.
Animal Logic released their debut album Animal Logic in 1989, peaking at No. 106 on the Billboard 200. A second album, Animal Logic II was released in 1991.
