She published her best-selling novel, I Am a Taxi in which she tells the story of an Colombian boy known as Diego who’s family were accused of trafficking cocaine paste that can be used to create cocaine. When an accident leaves Diego’s family owing an amount to the jail the prison they are in and the kid has to earn some money. He is thrown into Coca “pits” where the coca leaves are transformed into paste of coca, which is then followed by his journey from there. In the sequel Sacred Leaf, is about Diego’s experiences working with Ricardos (a family that assisted Diego) as well as a huge Coca Leaf protest.

In 2008, Ellis published Lunch with Lenin and Other Stories, a collection of short stories that explores the lives of children who have been affected directly, or indirectly, by drugs. The stories are set against backdrops as diverse as the remote north of Canada to Moscow’s Red Square to an opium farm in Afghanistan.

In 2014, she published Moon at Nine, a YA novel based on the true story of two teenage girls who are arrested and thrown in prison in Iran, a country where homosexuality is punishable by death.

One of her most well-known books is The Heaven Shop, which describes an orphan family in Malawi that are battling the sudden displacement that is a result of the effects of HIV/AIDS. It was written in order to debunk myths about HIV/AIDS , and recognize the bravery of children suffering patients.
