Smelter initially was signed to his team, the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball in 2010. However, he declined the offer to attend college baseball in Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech. He participated in college summer baseball for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League. After for three years in baseball between 2011 and 2013, mostly being a reliever shoulder injuries forced him to take up football. Smelter would go on to play for two years as the starter wide receiver with Georgia Tech’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. But on the 29th of November 2014, during the annual rivalry match against University of Georgia, Smelter ruptured his ACL.
Smelter was selected in the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, 132nd overall.
On June 15, 2018, Smelter signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was waived on September 1, 2018.
