Born in the southern part of Illinois, Baude moved to San Diego, CA, in 1977 with her then partner, Angelo Kolokithas (divorced 1979). Baude obtained her undergraduate diploma in the fall of 1979 from San Diego State University. While she was pursuing her graduate studies from New College of California, she was heavily influenced by Robert Duncan and other Bay Area writers of the 1980s. She earned her MA in English from New College in 1986. She was awarded her MFA at Mills College shortly thereafter.
