Other guest appearances and compositions include Kate Bush’s Sensual World (1989), Mike Oldfield’s Voyager (1996), Bryan Adams’ MTV Unplugged, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello. At 12 years old, Spillane started playing the uilleann pipes at the age of 12. His father was encouraging and instilled Spillane with his love for every music genre. Over the next three years the musician played in sessions and met a variety of renowned Irish musicians. At 16 years old He performed in Ireland as well as Europe, the United Kingdom and Europe. In 1978, he began writing his own songs. He was the gypsy in Joe Comerford’s 2001 film Traveller.
He was the founding part in Moving Hearts, along with Christy Moore and Donal Lunny in 1981. Though each member were a prodigy of Irish traditional music, the band performed mostly original music, often with a political twist and an edgy folk rock sound. The album they released The Storm (1985) was solely instrumental and contained some slower songs composed by Spillane. Spillane then made the surprising decision of joining forces along with American artist Bela Fleck as well as his fellow Englishman Albert Lee and others to create an “Davy Spillane” debut album featuring his original compositions as well as bluegrass, original blues and Atlantic Bridge. The band was a promotional tour group who produced Out of the Air in 1988, which is essentially the performance of Atlantic Bridge. Spillane then brought together the musicians of a new group which included Rory Gallagher and Kevin Glackin to record Shadow Hunter, an album that features a range of folk and rock styles. The album was then followed with Pipedreams which came out in the year 1991.
Spillane served his apprenticeship with pipe-makers Dan Dowd and Johnny Burke and now makes all his own instruments. In 2000, he recorded his only album of traditional tunes with Kevin Glackin, entitled Forgotten Days.
