Davitt Moroney (born 23 December 1950) is a British-born and educated musician, harpsichordist and organist. The parents of his were Irish and Italian descent His dad was an executive at an Anglo-Dutch Unilever conglomerate. From 1968 the musician pursued his graduate and undergraduate studies in the field of musicology in King’s College London, the faculty of which was led by Thurston Dart, who had a major influence on the early world of music. Moroney then pursued advanced study of the harpsichord with Kenneth Gilbert and Gustav Leonhardt. Moroney is also a teacher and performer certificates (1974) at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. After obtaining the PhD in musicology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1980, with a dissertation about the musical works of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd He returned to Paris and worked mostly as a freelance musician until he returned in his home in the United States to serve on the faculty of UC Berkeley in 2001.
He has also published critiques of the works of various composers from the baroque period, including a keyboard version (and the recording of his own) of Bach’s Johann Sebastian The Art of Fugue that includes his own version of the final , unfinished piece. He has also found the 40 and 60-part Mass Missa Sopra Ecco si beatogiorno written by Alessandro Striggio, lost since the 17th century, which the conductor believes was the first performance of the sixteenth century, on the 17th of July 2007, at the BBC Proms in London.
From 2001 to 2001, he was also the director for Editions de l’Oiseau-Lyre, the French-Australian music publishing firm that has sold the LP division into Decca Classics in 1970.

These include his rendition of the Livre de tablature de Clavescin by Marc Roger Normand Couperin of Turin who’s works were identified in 1997, the complete organ work by Louis Couperin and a newly discovered manuscript autograph of the Harpsichord compositions written by Henry Purcell.
His recordings include Bach, Biber, Couperin and many more. He was awarded his 2000 Gramophone Early Music award for his recording of the entire keyboard works of William Byrd (see also: My Ladye Nevells Booke and The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) and was published by Hyperion Records, which he played with harpsichords church organ, chamber organ, clavichord and the muselar.
