In Nuoro, Sardinia, Capello began his career with Sardinian club Cagliari. In the 2002-03 season, because of his suspension from Armando Pantanelli, Capello was used as Paolo Mancini’s substitute on the 26th of January, 2003 against Venezia. He earned promotion into Serie A as Serie B winner in 2004. The third goalie after Gennaro Iezzo, and Fanis Katergiannakis throughout the 2004-2005 Serie A season. Then, in the beginning of January, 2005, he quit for Belluno to be traded with Luca Tomasig. Then, in August of 2005, he quit for Olbia in a co-ownership arrangement. Then, in January of 2007, he quit to join Nuorese. In the 2008-09 season He played for Alghero and during the 2009-10 season, he was playing in the Serie D side Budoni.
In 2004 Capello was selected in 2004 to join his Italy U20 squad (U21 the feeder squad) and played three times. He was drafted to the Italy U21’s B squad specifically for the 2005 Mediterranean Games, for a training for a match with Serie D Best XI. He only played with the team in Morocco.
Capello was one of the survivors of Ponte Morandi bridge collapsing on 14 August 2018; his car fell 30 metres (100 ft), but he managed to walk away unscathed.
