As of 2009, Shoalts along with journalist Paul Waldie were awarded the Outstanding Sportswriting Award from Sports Media Canada for their coverage of the Phoenix Coyotes. As a reporter for the Globe in 1993, Shoalts and William Houston published a book called Greed and Glory: The Decline of the The Hockey Czar Alan Eagleson which detailed Alan Eagleson’s legal fight.

Shoalts was born in Wainfleet, Ontario. He claimed that when his uncle, father and brother were working employed in the construction field He followed in the footsteps of his mother who had an article on gardening. The graduate was a graduate of Pelham Secondary School in 1973 and then attended his first year at the University of Waterloo before transferring to the department of journalism in Conestoga College. Shoalts admitted that he didn’t consider his studies as serious until the end of beginning his time at University of Waterloo, when Shoalts decided to pursue a career in journalism. When he was at Conestoga College, he wrote for the student newspaper called Spoke.
After graduation from Conestoga College, Shoalts earned an internship with The Kitchener-Waterloo Record, where he was a reporter for his coverage of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Then, he got a job as a reporter for The Calgary Herald in 1979.
A graduate from Conestoga College, Shoalts has also worked for the Calgary Herald and Toronto Sun. In 2009, Shoalts and journalist Paul Waldie were awarded the Outstanding Sportswriting Award by Sports Media Canada for their coverage of the Phoenix Coyotes.
