David Sharp (15 February 1972 15 February 1972 – 15 May 2006.) was an English mountaineer who passed away close to the summit of Mount Everest. His death sparked controversy and controversy, as Sharp was spotted by a variety of other climbers who were heading to or return from Mount Everest when they were dying, even though several others attempted to assist him.
in 2002 Sharp was part of an excursion towards Cho Oyu, an 8,201 m (26,906 feet) summit in the Himalayas along with a group of climbers led by Richard Dougan and McGuinness of the Himalayan Project. They did reach the top, but one of the group members died when they fell into a crevasse. This gave them a place for the group’s journey to Everest the following year. Dougan Sharp was viewed by Dougan Sharp as a seasoned climber, however he noted that Sharp was slim and tall and had a thin frame and little body fat and in mountaineering that is cold, the amount of body fat is vital for the survival of a climber.
Sharp’s first Mount Everest expedition was in 2003 with a group led by British climber Richard Dougan. The party also included Terence Bannon, Martin Duggan, Stephen Synnott, and McGuinness. Only Bannon and McGuinness reached the summit, but the group incurred no fatalities. Dougan noted that Sharp had acclimatized well and was their strongest team member. In addition, Sharp was noted for being a pleasant person at camp and had a talent for rock climbing. However, when Sharp started to get frostbite on the group’s ascent, most of the group agreed to turn back with him from the summit.
Mountaineer David Watson, who was on Everest that season on the North side, commented to The Washington Post: “It’s too bad that none of the people who cared about David knew he was in trouble”, because “the outcome would have been a lot different.” Watson thought it was possible to save Sharp, and he said Sharp had worked with other climbers in 2004, to save a Mexican climber who had gotten into trouble. Watson was alerted the morning of 16 May by Phurba Tashi. Watson went to Sharp’s tent and showed Sharp’s passport to Tashi, who confirmed his identity. Around this time, a Korean team gave a radio report that the climber in red boots [Sharp] was dead. He had his rucksack with him, but his camera was missing, so it is not known if he summited.
McGuinness took part in an excursion which successfully reached Cho Oyu along with Sharp during 2002. McGuinness also participated in the 2003 trip towards Mount Everest with Sharp and others, and in 2006, he offered Sharp the chance to climb Everest in his own organized trip for a fraction of the amount he paid for to Asian Trekking the price, which Sharp did not accept as he was looking to climb Everest on his own. On the film Dying For Everest, McGuiness pointed out that Sharp didn’t expect to be saved … “absolutely not, he was clear to me that he understood the risks and he did not want to endanger anyone else”.
