David Sancious (born November 30 1953, Asbury Park, New Jersey) is a famous American musician from the United States. He was a founding part the Bruce Springsteen backing band known as the E Street Band, and played on the initial three Springsteen albums, as well as on Human Touch (1992), Tracks (1998) as well as Western Stars (2019). Sancious is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known as a keyboard player and guitarist. He quit his band the E Street Band in 1974 to start his own group, Tone, and released many albums. Sancious later became a well-known performer and tour musician with a particular focus on Stanley Clarke, Narada Michael Walden, Zucchero Fornaciari, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, and Sting as well as many other. Since June 1973, Sancious began touring frequently in The E Street Band. He added a unique dimension to the sound of the band. Influenced from Mozart and Thelonious Monk Thelonious Monk, he often used jazz or classical music in the intros and instrumental breaks. The second album by Springsteen, The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle, was an exhibition of Sancious the musician’s talent. His most famous contributions are an orchestral solo in “Kitty’s Back” and an captivating piano intro on “New York City Serenade”. He also is credited with the arrangement of the string for the song and even played the Saxophone on “The E Street Shuffle”.
In February 1974 drummer Vini Lopez left the E Street Band and Sancious recommended his friend, Ernest Carter, as a replacement. Later in the year Sancious and Carter helped record the title track of Springsteen’s third album, Born to Run before leaving the band. Ironically, the band formally adopted the “E Street Band” name only after the band member whose family lived on that street (i.e., Sancious) left the group.
Tone’s 1975 debut album Forest of Feelings was produced by Billy Cobham. Sancious’ work with Tone was a radical departure from the music he played with Springsteen; Tone explored progressive rock, gospel chorus (Fade Away, Sound of Love), and instrumental jazz fusion and had more in common with Yes or early Genesis than Sancious’ former boss.
From the year 1970 to March of 1973 Sancious split his days between hometown of New Jersey and Richmond, Virginia in which he was employed for Alpha Studios as a studio musician, performing jingles and sessions. While in Virginia and meeting the New Jersey native Ernest Carter. Through the years, Springsteen played numerous gigs in and around Richmond. In June 1972, Sancious was a keyboardist in Springsteen’s album debut”Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. On July 22, 1972 Sancious created a couple of demos together with Carter as well as E Street Band bassist Garry Tallent (who also split their time among New Jersey and Virginia.) Producer and songwriter Wes Farrell owned the rights to these demos. In 1976, he made them available under the name David Sancious, without Sancious’s consent.

Sancious began learning piano when he was seven years old, and by 11 he’d begun to teach himself guitar. He was into his 20s when he began to become involved with his first involvement in the Asbury Park music scene. In the 1960s and the beginning of 1970s, He was a member of various bands that featured Springsteen and later Members of the E Street Band, as along with Southside Johnny, and Bill Chinnock. The bands included Glory Road, Dr. Zoom & The Sonic Boom, The Bruce Springsteen Band and The Sundance Blues Band.
Although he was still trying to establish his own identity in the solo arena his talents were sought-after and, in the 70s, his popularity was heightened by the jazz fusion community. He recorded and toured together with Stanley Clarke, playing guitar as well as keyboards in a group which included John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham.
In August 1974 Sancious and Carter left the E Street Band and formed their own band Tone with bassist Gerald Carboy. At various times the band would feature Gail Boggs, Brenda Madison, Patti Scialfa, Gayle Moran (from Return To Forever and The Mahavishnu Orchestra), and future Santana vocalist Alex Ligertwood. Springsteen encouraged Sancious in his solo career and made sure music executives heard his demos, leading to a contract with Epic Records.

In 1982, David recorded and toured with Jon Anderson of YES. Jon’s, Animation (1982) album features David extensively. On Jon’s Spring and Summer 1982 US Animation tour, David showcased his piano and synthesizer prowess on several YES tunes as well as Jon Anderson tunes. But Jon wanted Sancious to get some real exposure so he included one of David’s solo works in the set. “The Play and Display of the Heart” (track 3 on David Sancious & Tone’s Transformation (The Speed of Love) album) was a regular showstopper.
