On the 8th of August 2013, Preece signed a new contract with Lincoln City on a one-year contract, and also became the club’s first goalkeeping coach.

He made the majority of his appearances for Darlington, Aberdeen and the Danish club Silkeborg. His final professional appearance came on 2 November 2013 for Lincoln City against Welling United.

5 December 2012 Preece signed a non-contract for Lincoln City and made his debut in the 4-2 victory against Dartford. On the 28th of December 2012, the contract was extended until the close of the season as a coach-player role. Preece played a key part in saving Lincoln from being relegated.

In 2005 Preece left Scotland to relocate to Denmark to join Silkeborg IF first and OB second. In Silkeborg Preece was a goalie of first choice until his departure to OB and his chances to play in the first team declined as a result of Arkadiusz Onyszko removing him from the team’s first squad.

After being let go by OB Preece then returned to England and joined Barnsley on a free one-year deal, with the option of extending the contract for another year. He was also expected to play alongside Luke Steele. After spending the first part of the season in the reserve Preece’s biggest chance of being in his first team was when the club made his debut Barnsley (and the first team of English football for a decade) with a loss of 1-0 against Watford on the 12th of September, 2009, and remained as the goalkeeper for three games in succession until Steele returned. After his season Preece was signed to another one-year contract despite playing as Barnsley’s backup goalie. Preece was a backup goalkeeper. During the 2011-12 season Preece was injured on his wrist as he was warming up prior to the game against Southampton and was ruled being out for the remainder of the season. At conclusion of the season, Preece was let go together with six other players, bringing to an end his three-year stay at Barnsley.

In April 2013, Preece joined Icelandic Premier League team Keflavík on a short-term deal following a brief loan. Preece made this decision to ensure he was as fit as possible for the start of the English football league season in August 2013.
