David Christopher Miedzianik was born on the 24th of July, 1956 to an Russian father and an English mother. He wrote about his paternal grandpa having met Grigori Rasputin. The couple divorced at the age of Miedzianik was just three years old. His father moved to London and stayed there for the following 10 years until his death in the year 1969, due to an ailment caused by diabetes. In the year 1970 Miedzianik was diagnosed with autism following his admission into Middlewood Hospital, but did not begin taking classes for special education until two years afterward. In the late 1970s He began writing poetry for Jigsaw the official journal for Middlewood Hospital. According to him, this inspired his writing style, like his desire to become a musician as was just an adolescent. In the late 1970s and the early 1990s Miedzianik was often a frequent attendee at concerts of local Sheffield groups and made friends with members of these groups.
My Autobiography is the debut novel and only prose novel written by David Miedzianik. It was released in December 1986 at the University of Nottingham, the book follows the life of Miedzianik from his birth to 1985, the year in which the novel was completed.
He was noted for portraying autism through an autistic person’s perspective. In his poem “The Mega-Chip Men” from 1997, he mocks the idea that autistics cannot think for themselves, comparing them to computers that can think independently. He also implies that they can work relentlessly. In another poem “Miracles Don’t Happen”, he talks about how he claims that his own country won’t accept him.
The British songwriter Ray Hearne once wrote a song about Miedzianik’s life in 1989, titled “Song for David”. Additionally, the British metal band Solitary wrote a song named “Twisted” in 1998, which was released on their album Nothing Changes and dedicated to Miedzianik. The band stated “‘Twisted’ was written for and inspired by David Miedzianik by his and others continued fight against autism.” Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies wrote a song about his experiences titled “A Lass to Want Me”. “Song for David” and “A Lass to Want Me” were both featured on A Season of Changes: The Autistic Awareness Album, a music album about autistic experiences released in 1997 to fundraise for autism services in Doncaster.
In 1985 the author published the autobiography of his life My Autobiography. It was released in December 1986 by the University of Nottingham. The author, Professor Elizabeth Newson in the foreword stated that it would be the first autism autobiography ever that was published. the one called Emergence: labeled autistic from Temple Grandin being the first one. Because he’s not able to hold his job, he written in his autobiography “Living is more or less a constant bore”. A long-form poem, hope that some girl will want to Meet Me After Reading All This was published in 1987. He also began publishing his poetry in various autism-related magazines in the UK and the US. In 1990, an excerpt from his long-form poem appeared in the issue of The Advocate, the Autism Society of America’s newsletter.

David Christopher Miedzianik (/”m e dZ / N I K / , born on July 24, 1956) is an English autistic writer and poet. His poems depict the most difficult characteristics of being an autistic. In addition, his poems address the social issues he faces. He’s unemployed however, he is a writer who writes about his desire to find work and love. Miedzianik writes about specific instances of these desires. The writings of Miedzianik have been extensively examined by prominent autism researchers who say his writing is well-thought out, sophisticated and showing an uncommonly keen awareness of his difficulties with social interaction.
As per the professor Elizabeth Newson, who wrote the foreword, Miedzianik’s written talent was so impressive that minor edits were not needed prior to publication. The novel’s inspiration to a research study of autistic individuals carried out in 1978 by the University where Miedzianik’s mother was interviewed and a follow-up study in which Miedzianik was also interviewed. Peter Hobson has described his writing style in the novel as being shrewd and linguistically talented. Hobson has described the writings of Miedzianik on his solitude as a bit repetitive and disjointed. He acknowledges his appreciation for solitude. Francesca Happe has described Miedzianik’s autobiography as having “least autistic” writing from the authors he was as compared to such as Temple Grandin, as he showed the most awareness in his book of his weaknesses and the way in which others perceived his limitations.
By the early 1990s, he had gotten local media attention for his writings, leading to an interview on Against All Odds, a local Sheffield TV programme, and an US release of his autobiography, including the long-form poem as an appendix. He would release two poetry anthologies, Taking the Load off My Mind (1993) and Now All I’ve Got Left is Myself (1997). 1997 also saw him contributing to Sarah Croskin’s paper Autism: a life history approach. He continued publishing poetry to the Internet until roughly 2004.
