The year 2012 was his best, and he became the first I-Kiribati athlete to be selected on merit to compete in to participate in the Olympic Games (rather than receive an invitation for a wildcard) In any sport. He was the first to finish on the podium in the Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which made him a Commonwealth champion. As part of Kiribati’s contingent during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London He competed in the 94 kg weight class and placed 17th of 21 with a total lifting of 325kg. He was once again the flag bearer of his nation at the Games in the opening ceremony.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he became famous for his dance routines, which he did to bring awareness of the effects of global warming on his small island nation, upon completion of a clean & jerk lift.
He was ranked 4th in the 85kg weight class in the Oceania Weightlifting Championships, with the weight of 292 kilograms.
