The native of Pontiac, Michigan, Holston was a student at Avondale High School in Auburn Hills where he was the coach of the team to win the 2002 state championship in Class B. Through his time at Avondale Holston was awarded all- county and all-state awards, and scored more than 2500 career points, yet he was not granted a single basketball scholarship.

Holston was enrolled at Chicago State in the fall of 2004 and was able to earn an entry on the roster of men’s basketball players as an unofficial walk-on.
