According to Sandberg, his life changed “in every way imaginable” after Lights Out; he began receiving tons of messages from film industry people who wanted to work with him.
In 2013, he began to shift his focus away from animation and documentary works and towards horror short films. According to Sandberg, his original goal with filmmaking had been to make horror and sci-fi films, and he felt he needed to have some existing work in that field in order to get funding for future work. Lacking any funding of his own, his shorts were made with no budget—his equipment and props consisted mostly of items he already had or could buy very cheaply, and his only cast and crew were himself and Lotta Losten, his wife. He released his films on both Vimeo and YouTube, using his alias ponysmasher.
In the year 2006 Sandberg discovered moderate internet success in making short animated films. According to Sandberg his first online success was with his short films For Barnen and Vad Tyst Det Blev which the one that racked up 1.7 millions views on YouTube. Due to his growing popularity Sandberg started receiving requests for animation jobs and his first gig was as a consultant for the program Myggan [sv] on Swedish Channel 5.

David F. Sandberg (born 21 January 1981) is a Swedish filmmaker from Sweden. He is well-known for his no-budget, collective short horror films under the pseudonym ponysmasher online as well as for his 2016 directororial debut Lights Out, based on his critically acclaimed horror short named the same. The director also produced The Conjuring Universe spin-off horror film Annabelle: Creation (2017) and Shazam! (2019) which is the seventh installment of DC Extended Universe. DC Extended Universe.
He continued to work for Film i Jonkoping, primarily involved in documentaries. From 2006 until 2009 the filmmaker worked on a number of documentaries produced by Arvsfonden [sv] which is the Swedish Inheritance Fund. His final collaboration with Rosberg prior to retiring included Animera which translates to Gora Livlig in 2010, a documentary on seniors who create animated films.
Sandberg married actress, designer, and photographer Lotta Losten in 2013. She has featured in many of his short films, including Lights Out.
