David Joseph Cornell (born 28 March 1991) is a Welsh footballer who is goalkeeper for Northampton Town. He also played for his country’s Wales youth team.
Cornell made his debut for professional football for Swansea on the 25th of August 2009 when he was selected in the starting lineup for the League Cup match against Scunthorpe United. In February of 2010, Cornell signed a new three and a half year agreement for Swansea that would keep him in the club until July. The 2009-2010 season was the first time that Cornell being as a reserve player for the Swansea team’s 46 Football League Championship games.
Cornell made his debut for the Wales under-21 side on 18 May 2010 in a 1–0 defeat to Austria under-21s.
In the 2010–11 season, Cornell fell down the pecking order at Swansea following the signing of Yves Ma-Kalambay as cover for Dorus de Vries and was loaned out to Welsh Premier League side Port Talbot Town during the second half of the season to gain first team experience. Cornell made 14 appearances for Port Talbot, keeping 5 clean sheets.
In November 2009 Cornell made his debut in the Wales under-19 team, taking part in consecutive losses to Portugal as well as Spain at the qualifier round of 2010’s UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship. The following day, Cornell was handed a surprise call-up to the Wales senior team in their friendly match with Scotland because of the commitments that included Owain Fon Williams along with Lewis Price, and an injury to Boaz Myhill. Cornell however , was not part of the squad for matchday.

Cornell began his career with the Wales under-17 team on the 25th of March 2007 in a 3-0 loss against Belarus after which he continued to win five caps for Wales at the under-17 level with his last one coming on October 6, 2007 in the draw between Spain during the qualification round for the 2008 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship. Then, in August of 2009 Cornell received his debut call up to the Wales under-21 side , which was scheduled to take on Italy however, he remained in the reserve.
After making it to Swansea City’s Academy, Cornell was included in the Swansea senior team for their preseason tour to Spain. However , the 17-year-old’s development was stopped when he sustained an injury to his wrist on the trip. In the following time, Cornell was called up to the first team bench for the Swansea’s fifth-round FA Cup match against Fulham following the signing on loan Dimitrios Konstantopoulos wasn’t able to extend his stay with the club. A few days later, Cornell was included again on the bench of Swansea during an Swans FA Cup fifth round replay against Fulham. In the wake of impressing coach Roberto Martinez, Cornell was named Dorus De Vries’ understudy for remaining portion of the 2008-09 campaign but was not to be seen in the Swansea’s matchday squads that were left.
Cornell was called up to the Wales senior squad again in October 2010 for the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying match against Switzerland. He was an unused substitute in a match that Wales lost 4–1.
