Clary has been knighted during the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to international science. His present research focus is the development of semiclassical rate theories.

From 2009 to 2013 , he served as the initial chief scientist advisor for The Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The place of birth was Halesworth, Suffolk, and was a student at Colchester Royal Grammar School from 1964 until 1971. He holds earned a BSc (1974) in the University of Sussex and a PhD (1977) and ScD (1997) from the University of Cambridge, where the latter was in Corpus Christi College. He was a postdoctoral researcher with IBM located in San Jose, California, as well as at The University of Manchester.
