David Cyril Geary (born June 7th 1957 Providence, Rhode Island) is a United States cognitive developmental and evolutionary psychologist, with a particular interest in mathematical learning as well as differences between sexes. He is currently an Associate Professor of Curators and a Thomas Jefferson fellow in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

The research of Geary on mathematical development led to an award for MERIT by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2005 the University of Missouri awarded Geary an Honorary Professorship in Curators’ Studies, as well as an honorary Thomas Jefferson Professorship in 2009. In addition He was the co- recipient of George A. Miller Award for an outstanding Recent Research Article in the field of General Psychology for the 2007 Psychological Science in the Public Interest monograph on gender variations in mathematics and science. The monograph was co-authored by Halpern Benbow, Gur, Hyde and Gernsbacher. He is an associate members of the Association for Psychological Science (2005) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2011).

Geary was a contributor to 1998’s Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools and He was named to President’s National Mathematics Advisory Panel. While as a member of the group, he was chair of the task group for learning processes. In 2007 the year 2007, he was named by the president George W. Geary earned an BS diploma in Psychology at Santa Clara University (California) in 1979. He then earned an MS degree from the school psychology clinic for children in California State University at Hayward (now East Bay) in 1981. After earning the MS qualification, he began working at the emergency treatment centre within the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, and began his Ph.D. programme at University of California, Riverside in 1982. His first research interests were the hemispheric latency and its gender differences, but he later focused his dissertation research upon mathematical cognitions under the supervision under the direction of Keith Widaman (now at UC, Davis). After having completed the Ph.D. in developmental psychology in 1986, he accepted an internship of one year with the University of Texas at El Paso and later moved towards at the University of Missouri, first on the Rolla campus (1987-89) before moving to Columbia. At the time the chair was his position for the Department of Psychological Sciences (2002-2005) and was a major contributor to the development of the Ph.D. program in developmental psychology.

The research interests of Geary are centered on his four books: children’s mathematics development (1994) male, female (1998 the second edition), Origin of mind (2005) along with Evolution of vulnerability (2015) The latter was mentioned during an interview in the Guardian. He also is co-author of the 2008 edition of Sex differences: a summary of more than 100 years of research. He also serves as co-editor along alongside Drs. Berch as well as Mann Koepke of a five-volume series on mathematical cognition as well as learning.

His research on mathematical development ranged from mathematical modeling of adults’ processing of arithmetic problems; the effects of aging on these processes; and cross national and cross generational differences in mathematical abilities. In this area, he is best known for his research on learning difficulties in mathematics and in 1993 published a theoretical and review article that outlined subtypes of disabilities and helped to organize subsequent research in this area. He currently directs the Missouri Longitudinal Study of Mathematical Learning and Disability.
