Copley was appointed to the Board of Directors for Copley Press in 1975. He was becoming the senior vice president , and later assistant to President in the year 1984. Then, in 1988, he was appointed the president of Copley Press and in 1997 Copley was appointed editor for the San Diego Union-Tribune. In his time as the publisher The U-T was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes. One was in 2006 , for its role in exposing an investigation into the Duke Cunningham bribery scandal; the other award was on the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for the editor Steve Breen. In 2007/2008, the newspaper also received an award from the Association of California Newspaper Publishers’ Best of the State prize. In May 2009, the San Diego Union-Tribune was sold to an Beverly Hills investment firm.
