Buchanan joined League Two club Northampton Town after his release from Preston North End. Buchanan was among 8 players who were released at the request of Northampton at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign; three more were put up on the market for sale.

Buchanan was first introduced to Preston on August 13, 2012, when they played Huddersfield Town in the first round of the League Cup. On the 17th December 2013 Buchanan signed a contract extension at Preston for an additional twelve months, which means he will remain in the club until the summer of 2015.
