David John Briggs (born 1 November 1962 in Bromsgrove) is a well-known English organist and composer from England. He began his career with the Cathedral Organist, serving as the Assistant Organist of Hereford Cathedral before becoming the organist at Truro as well as Gloucester Cathedrals. Influenced heavily from Jean Langlais and Pierre Cochereau, Briggs is regarded as one of the top performers, and currently works as an organist for concert. Briggs composes organ and choral music as well as transcribed scores of orchestral music into arrangements for solo organs and also many of Cochereau’s recordings of recordings of improvisations.
Briggs is the Organist Emeritus of Gloucester Cathedral, and gives regularly scheduled masterclasses at The Royal Northern College of Music and Cambridge University. He is a full-time professional as a concert musician composer, organist and composer. He is a resident of Boston, Massachusetts. He was married to the second time to Margaret Nimocks, in 2004 and adopted one daughter, Eloise and two children from his first marriage.
In September 2012, Briggs became Artist-in-Residence at the Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto, Canada. His responsibilities included giving celebrity recitals, playing regularly at services, composing liturgical music for the Cathedral, and working on the establishment of a vision for the music program, including the design and installation of a new organ or organs and relevant acoustical enhancements. In October 2017, he became Artist-in- Residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
He was appointed the Organist as well as Master of Choristers in Truro Cathedral in 1989, before moving to a similar job located at Gloucester Cathedral in 1994. When he was at Gloucester he was in charge of the restoration of the organ, which also included installing the “Divided Pedal”. This permits for the Pedal Board to be ‘split which means that the pedal is able to stop sound at the lower portion, while the upper section is configured to replicate the sound of of the manuals. Briggs also supervised the installation of the system in the Father Willis organ of Truro Cathedral when it was rebuilt in 1991. Then, in May of 2002 Briggs quit Gloucester for a career as an organist in concert and composer. He was succeeded the second the second time Andrew Nethsingha.

David Briggs was educated at Solihull School. He was an organ student in King’s College, Cambridge from 1981 until 1984. At the age of 17, he was awarded an honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO). He also served as the Principal Viola for the National Youth Orchestra.
At his university, he visited Australia, New Zealand, Belgium and Belgium, New Zealand, Australia Netherlands as well as Germany together with his college chorus. In 1983, he won the Countess of Munster Award to pursue a course in Interpretation and Improvisation with Jean Langlais in Paris and who helped him further develop his fascination with the art of improvisation through his transcriptions of tapes of Cochereau’s late Pierre Cochereau. The process of transcribe the amazing improvisations on Cochereau’s cassette recordings took 11 years. Briggs later performances and recordings received him the acclaim he first received. Briggs was the very first British organist to be awarded the Tournemire prize for an improvisation during the St Albans International Organ Festival.
He made his debut at the BBC Proms on 14 August 2010 as part of “Bach Day” playing pieces by J S Bach, some originally for organ, others in arrangements, including Briggs’ own arrangement of the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068.
