He attended Bible College at the University of British Columbia and Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he was a student of creative communication. He taught English as well as Creative Writing at Winnipeg’s Kelvin High School from 2002.
The novel that he published in 2005 The Time in Between won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, received an enviable starred review in The Kirkus Reviews trade magazine, and was recently selected in 2007 for the International Dublin Literary Award. In 2008, he published his fifth novel called The Retreat that was shortlisted to be a finalist for Scotiabank’s Giller Prize , and it was awarded The McNally The Robinson Award for the Best Book as well as The Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction. In 2010, he was shortlisted once more for the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his sixth novel The Matter with Morris.
The novel he wrote his debut, A Year of Lesser in 1996 was an New York Times Notable Book and the winner from the McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. The novel he wrote in 2002, The Case of Lena S. was one of the finalist books to The Governor General’s Award for English-language fiction, and was awarded the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. The novel is also an award-winning finalist in The McNally Robinson Award for the Best Book and also the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction.
