David Beauchard is one of the most popular and richest French comic book artist who was born on February 9, 1959 in Nîmes, Occitania, France. Pierre-Francois “David” Beauchard (born 9 February 1959) who goes by his penname David B., is a French comic book writer and artist, and is one of the founding members of L’Association.
Since 1997, he’s been working for other publishers than L’Association and has also collaborated with authors, including Joann Sfar Christophe Blain, and Emmanuel Guibert.
In 2005 Beauchard was awarded the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Artist.
With historical assistance by Jean-Pierre Filiu, Beauchard published the 2012 graphic novel Best of Enemies: A History of US and Middle East Relations through SelfMadeHero. It was translated to English by Edward Gauvin.
From 1996 until 2003, he wrote the popular autobiographical epic of the Ascension du Haut-Mal (meaning literally “The Rise of the High Evil” however, it was it was published as a comic book in English by the name of Epileptic, “haut mal” refers to what is known in English as the grand mal seizure). It was his first lengthy books that was translated to English and is thought to be one of the best of the recent French-Belgian comics. It has also been awarded awards in the Angouleme International Comics Festival : in 2002 the fourth volume was awarded the Angouleme International Comics Festival Prize for Scenario. In 1998, and in 2004 Volumes 2 , 6 and 7 were both nominated to win The Prize for Best Comic Book.

After completing his studies in marketing at the Duperre School of Applied Arts in Paris, Beauchard began working in comics in the year 1985 (Pas de samba pour capitaine Tonnerre) He also created and illustrated stories for various magazines which included Okapi, A suivre, Tintin Reporter, and Chic. His distinctive black and white style was heavily influenced from Georges Pichard and Jacques Tardi as well as other artists.
He was a co-founder in 1990. founded the publisher independent L’Association which has become a major force within French tiny-press-print comics. The comics were published in the L’Association Anthologie magazine Lapin as well as in a variety of small-format comics. The majority of his work from the 90s were dream paintings which was collected in the Cheval Bleme and Les Incidents of the Night.
In 1998, he was named European Cartoonist of the year by The Comics Journal.
