Born close to Eldoret located in the Kenyan Uasin Gishu District, Barmasai started running for the first time in 2009, and hoped to replicate the achievements of William Kiplagat (the 2003 Rotterdam Marathon winner). In the final days of 2009, Barmasai began his first professional marathon in Eldoret and won the race in the time of 2:16:00 hours. He joined with European athletics director Jos Hermens. Following injuries halted his training in 2010 and racing, he completed his second marathon at the high altitude Nairobi Marathon and took home in a time improvement in the 2:10:31 hour mark.
Barmasai enrolled in the prestigious race in 2011 Dubai Marathon with the aim of making it to the top 10. Making his debut in an international race, he was the leader of the race all the way and held the more experienced runners like Eliud Kiptanui and Evans Cherubuiyot to claim his third consecutive win with a time of 2:07:18 hrs, nearly one minute faster than the runners. He took home $250,000 for the victory. Because of this accomplishment the athlete was picked as a member of Kenya’s Kenyan national team for the 2010 World Championships in Athletics. For his first time in the team representing Kenya the team, he finished fifth at the World Championships Marathon in Daegu and helped Kenya to take a dominating victory during the IAAF World Marathon Cup team competition. The last race of the year was in the Zevenheuvelenloop 15K race however he was able to only manage ninth in an hour and 45 minutes.
And on 8 February 2020 he won the Lagos City Marathon with a course record time of 2:10:00, winning the grand prize of $50,000 and an extra $20,000 for breaking the four-year record.
