David Michael Pallone (born October 5 1951) is an American former Major League Baseball umpire who was employed by the National League from 1979 to 1988. In his career, Pallone was a the uniform number 26.
Pallone played his first game as an umpire at 19 years old at the time of his debut in New York’s Penn League, in May 1971. The league remained during the 1972 season before being transferred into the Carolina League for the 1973 season. He played for a half-season there, before getting promoted on June 27 into the Eastern League. He was an umpire in the EL until the season of 1975 before being called into an International League. Pallone played the 1976 season playing in each of his International as well as the Eastern Leagues before being called up for his home league of the IL at the end of 1977. The league he was in till 1979 when he became one of the eight umpires who were hired in the strike of that year’s Major League umpires.
In September of the same the year Pallone had to leave the company. Pallone had been “outed” in a New York Post article later in the year. Pallone published his autobiography Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball that became an New York Times best-seller, and was republished as an electronic book. Pallone currently conducts diversity training for colleges, corporations as well as athletes affiliated with the NCAA. Pallone was one of the first group of inductees into the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

Pallone was a part of the NL for a decade, and was an umpire in his 1983 Major League Baseball All-Star Game as well as in the 1987 National League Championship Series. He was home plate umpire at the time when Pete Rose tied Ty Cobb for the most hits (4191) as well as the 4,000th strikeout of Nolan Ryan was on June 11, 1985 in September of 1986, he served as an umpire at second base Mike Scott of the Houston Astros pitched a no-hitter of 2-0 in the game against San Francisco Giants to clinch the NL West Division championship.
On the 30th of April 1988 Pallone became involved in an extremely controversial dispute with Rose when he was the manager of for the Cincinnati Reds. Pallone was the umpire at first base when he declared New York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson safe after an untimely call at the bottom of the ninth which gave Howard Johnson the time to score the game-winning hit. Rose promptly rushed over to Pallone to challenge the decision and the manner in which it was done. As both of them raged Pallone was mocking Rose’s gestures and pointed the finger of Rose which caused Rose to claim that Pallone was poking her on the cheek. Rose then punched Pallone which led to Rose’s swift expulsion. Pallone claimed he did not touch Rose as well. Major League Baseball never determined that he actually did touch Rose or find out that he didn’t. The incident resulted in fans throwing trash on the field, causing a temporary stoppage to the game, and prompting Pallone to be removed of the game to relieve tensions. The incident led to Rose getting suspended for 30 consecutive days, and an additional fine of $10,000.
