Machemer was born in St. Joseph, Michigan. The professional career of Machemer started in June 1972 after he was selected for the Angels in the fourth round of the draft for amateurs. Machemer made his debut in the major leagues at 27 years old for the California Angels on June 21 the 21st of June, 1978. He was playing at second base, and leading off in the game against Minnesota Twins. In his very first major-league game against Twins pitching coach Geoff Zahn, Machemer hit home runs to the left side of his field which made him one of the 118 players in the history of major league baseball to hit a home run in their first game. The home run would turn out to be his sole major league home strike. Machemer has scored more than 1,600 wins in the span of 23 seasons since making his debut as a manager in 1985. He was the manager who led his team the Stockton Ports to the California League championship in 1986. He also led to lead the AZL Giants to their third league championship in the span of five years after a triumph against their rivals the AZL Angels in August 31st of August, 2008.

Machemer managed the previous three years at Double-A Connecticut. After winning the 2008 AZL championship, he was promoted to the Class A Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League (2009–10), then back to Double-A with the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League (2011–13). Machemer then returned to the Baltimore organization in 2014 as a scout.
