Daryl Porter is one of the most popular and richest American baseball player who was born on January 17, 1952 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States. Darrell Ray Porter (January 17 1952 – 5 August 2002) was a American pro-baseball player. He was an catcher for Major League Baseball from 1971 until 1987 with his team of the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers. He was a four-time All-Star was renowned for his exceptional defensive abilities and power-hitting abilities. He had a difficult time, but was never capable of overcoming the addiction problem to alcohol and went on to be the best player in 1982’s World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Porter died of an accidental overdose of drugs in 2002, at the age of 50.

Porter has been married two times. The first of his marriages, which took place in 1972 to the then Teri Brown ended in divorce in the year 1976. On November 29, 1980, Porter married Deanne Gaulter. They had 3 children together: Lindsey, Jeffrey, and Ryan.

In 1984, Porter wrote an autobiography titled Snap Me Perfect!, in which he detailed his life in baseball and his struggles with substance abuse.

After checking into the rehab center, Porter became a born-again Christian, married, and became a spokesman for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His production on the field declined after rehab, and he never again approached his 1979 levels. He went on to play in three World Series—in 1980 with the Royals and in 1982 and 1985 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Porter won both the 1982 National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award and the 1982 World Series MVP Award. At the time, Porter was only the second player in baseball history to win both awards in a single postseason; Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates won both awards in 1979. After the 1985 season, the Cardinals released Porter, and he wound up his career with two seasons with the Texas Rangers as a part-time player. He appeared in his final major league game on October 4, 1987 and retired at the age of 35.

Porter took over Buck Martinez as the Royals starting Catcher in place of Buck Martinez as the Royals’ starting. He had the most successful year of his professional career, in 1979 the Royals catcher achieved an .291 batsman’s average, 20 home runs and 112 runs batted in and was the league’s top hitter by 121 walks. He became the sixth player of Major League history to score 100 runs and to have hundred runs batted into. This feat was previously done in the past by Mickey Cochrane, Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk — all members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The only two players, Porter and Cochrane were able to walk 100 times 100 runs, 100 walks, along with 100 RBI in one season. The 1979 season ended with him with a third place finish on the list of Wins Above Replacement behind Fred Lynn and his Royals teammate George Brett. While with the Royals He was named for the three successive American League All-Star teams.

Porter was born in Joplin, Missouri, Porter was chosen in the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft. Porter made his debut in the major leagues in September of 1971 with the Brewers at the age of 19 years old. He placed second in the Rookie of the Year poll. Porter said to his Associated Press that during the winter between 1979 and 1980, he began to become anxious and convinced that the commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn, who was known for his toughness with substance abuse–knew of his addiction. Porter claimed that he believed Kuhn tried to get into his home and was planning to disqualify him from playing baseball for the rest of his life. Porter discovered himself sitting at night, in darkness sitting in front of the windows in anticipation of Kuhn to come in, while holding the billiard ball and shotgun.

During spring training in 1980, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe paid a visit to the Kansas City clubhouse. He asked the players ten questions, the point of which being if a player answered three or more of the questions with an affirmation, the player might have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Porter affirmed all ten questions and checked himself into a rehabilitation center, admitting he had abused alcohol, cocaine, Quaaludes, and marijuana.
