Darren John Hughes (born 6 October 1965) is an English former footballer. A left-back renowned for his speed and speed, he had 388 appearances in league and cup competitions with six clubs during 14 years with the English Football League.
Hughes quit Goldstone Ground and joined John Rudge’s Port Vale on loan in September 1987. He later signed permanently for a fee of PS5,000 in the following month. Hughes scored a goal against his former club Brighton in a 2-0 victory in Vale Park on 28 September He went on to play 53 times in his club the “Valiants” in the 1987-88 season. He played in 56 games during the 1988-89 season. This included the two legs of the Third Division play-off Final victory against Bristol Rovers. He played 46 matches during the 1989-90 campaign, when Vale moved into being in Second Division. Legendary club member and teammate Phil Sproson named him as the best left-back in the club of the 1980s. But he was able to only be involved in 18 games in the 1990-91 season as the hernia injury he sustained and had two surgeries to correct it. During this time, Nigerian player Reuben Agboola took his place. Hughes recovered to his fitness in April of 1991. He played in 49 games during the relegation period of 1991-92 and also scored against Newcastle United in a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park. He ruptured his muscle in his thigh in July 1992, and had to go through two surgeries to fix it during the 1992-93 campaign. This led to him being unable to play in the play-off Final as well as the League Trophy Final. Injured at the start of the 1993-94 season he discovered to his surprise that he was dismissed from the team in February of 1994. The club took him into an arbitration tribunal, citing unfair dismissal. The outcome being a trial lasting six weeks in August 1994 to establish his fitness and abilities. The club resigned him in November 1994 , after becoming unhappy, and he transferred with Northampton Town in January 1995.
Hughes was a part of Chic Bates “Shrews” to post a 17th place finishing at the top of the Second Division in 1985-86. Hughes was released from Gay Meadow on a PS35,000 transfer to league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion in September of 1986. However, he couldn’t stop Alan Mullery’s “Seagulls” from suffering relegation at the bottom of the table in the season 1986/87.

Hughes began his career with Everton and played during their FA Youth Cup final defeat to Norwich City in 1983, and also in the win against Stoke City during the final of the following year in which he was the one to score the winner against Stoke from the outside of the penalty area. Hughes was signed to his professional debut in the month of October 1983. The team then played from January to November 1995 with Northampton Town, before transferring to Exeter City. After two seasons with Exeter the club moved him to league football for Morecambe as well as Newcastle Town.

- He made 62 Third Division appearances, as Peter Fox’s “Grecians” struggled at the foot of the English Football League in 1995–96 and 1996–97. He then departed St James Park for Morecambe. He played ten games as he helped Jim Harvey’s “Shrimpers” to a fifth-place finish in the Conference National in 1997–98. He left the Globe Arena and later played for Newcastle Town in the North West Counties League.
