On May 9, 2009 Appleton was matched against Dennis Hatch from in the United States in a three-day race-to-100 match played with 10-ball. Hatch did come out on top by scoring 100-83. The same year, he also won his place in the World Pool Masters tournament by beating Nick van den Berg.
In 2012, Appleton won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship, subduing China’s Li Hewen in the final with a score of 13-12. Later, in 2013, he also won the nine-ball tournament at the World Games 2013, beating Chang Jung-lin 11–10 in the final. Later that year, he scored a record breaking 200 run in the World 14.1 Tournament against Francisco Bustamante, winning 200-1. This feat would break the World Straight Pool Championship record of 73 events with a 175 ball run which was previously held by Thorsten Hohmann., as well as the all-time record at any major event of 183 which was set at the US Open 14.1 by Joe Procita, and also the first time, in a major tournament, of completing all 200 balls and finishing the game without missing a shot.
In 2014, he won the World 14.1 Tournament, beating Shane Van Boening in the final. Also he won 2014 World Cup of Pool playing with Karl Boyes for Team England. On 2 February 2015, Darren Appleton won the 2015 Chinese Pool World Championship, defeating Mark Selby 21–19 in the final.
Appleton was the winner of the 2008 World Ten-ball Championship by the WPA (the first world championship in 10 balls) in the face of Wu Jia-qing, who was the world’s champion in nine-ball as well as eight-ball in Taiwan. In winning, he became the first male from Britain to win a world championship , following Daryl Peach who won the world championship in nine-ball one year prior. Appleton is also the world champion in nine-ball. He won the 2012 WPA World Nine-ball Champion by beating Li He-wen the final.

Appleton who first began playing pool when he was 12 was previously the world’s no. one player in the British style eight-ball pool. He finished second twice in the world championship of the WEPF eight-ball pool. The year 2006 was the first time he was a participant in the World Pool Tour’s eight- ball tournament, which is a standardised event. The same year, he was the winner of the Straight Pool Challenge at the Derby City Classic.
On October 5, 2008. Appleton won an unexpected victory at the WPA’s inaugural Ten-ball World Championship over Wu Jia-qing 13-11. Appleton won the top prize of US$100,000 “I’ve waited 16 years for this and have to enjoy the moment. I had mixed feelings and I was looking back at my disappointments in the past. I was ranked first (earlier in the decade) in the world but I have never won a world championship… It was a dream come true for me and I’m happy to win the title here in the Philippines.”
Darren Appleton also won the 2010 U.S. Open 9-ball Championship against Corey Deuel of the United States in a match that went into extra racks. Appleton was a member of the victorious European team in the 2010 Mosconi Cup. He was named MVP for the tournament, after winning 5 of his 6 matches in the series.
