Darrel Wayne Ray (born on 24 August 1950) is an American organizational psychologist who is focused on a variety of topics, including the workplace’s culture of organization and secular sexuality. He also is a lecturer podcaster, activist and atheist. He was a key figure in the creation of the group Recovering from Religion.

He was involved in 2009 when he was a part of helping in the creation of the organization Recovering from Religion which is a self-help group that assists those who have left their religious education. He is currently involved with Recovering from Religion as a board member as well as a member of the Recovering from Religion program dubbed “The Secular Therapy Project” that aims to assist patients access secular and scientific therapy.

He has also appeared as a secular psychological expert on television, including ABC News show, Nightline, where in 2011, he spoke out against exorcisms and took a scientific viewpoint towards psychological illnesses that might look like possession.

On August 30, 2014, Ray launched a podcast about human sexuality and atheism called Secular Sexuality where is he also the host.

The year was 1982. Ray as well as a number of other writers released a report describing an investigation conducted with male juvenile offenders in the juvenile corrections institute. Ray and his team analyzed whether density of the population affected the participants.

In 1972, Ray earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology/anthropology at Friends University in Wichita, and in 1974 he completed an MA in Church and Community at Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1978, he graduated from his doctoral degree of psychology in Peabody College of Vanderbilt University where he earned his Ed.D.

Ray was raised as a traditional Christian within Wichita, Kansas, by parents who later become missionaries, and by the family members that were actively involved in church activities. The fundamentalist background informs a lot of his writing later. After 1979 Ray was a member of his first Quaker Church, then later went to his local Presbyterian church. From 1969 to 1984 , he was a Sunday school teacher, presided and was a tenor soloist with several church choirs. He was dismissed from the church in mid-80s, and is an atheist.

In May 2011, Ray and Amanda Brown (an undergraduate at the University of Kansas studying sex and sexuality) released the results of a self-reporting online survey of over 14,500 American secularists, titled “Sex and Secularism: What Happens When You Leave Religion?”, concluding that sex improves dramatically after leaving religion, and people who are religious exhibit similar sexual behaviors as the non-religious, but experience markedly increased guilt. The study has been criticized for suffering from self- selection bias, due to its recruiting of participants via the science blog Pharyngula.
