It was 2004 when Cioni had his breakthrough moment in his ability to sustain his performance in time trialing, and in climbing the ranks of crucial stage races. After a successful Tour de Romandie, where Cioni was fifth overall Cioni was 4th in Giro d’Italia and followed this by securing third place at the Tour de Suisse. Cioni was then selected as a representative of Italy during the World Cycling Championships, however the event was not permitted to race if he showed an hematocrit over 50 percent. While Cioni knew his levels of hematocrit were natural high, the fact is that he unsuccessfully sought an exemption and a personal standard from the Italian Federation in 1999, because his level was never consistently above 50% but was consistently in the vicinity of 50. The UCI granted Cioni an exemption certification, with a personal level after additional testing in November 2004. As of 2005, Cioni was transferred to the newly created Liquigas-Bianchi team. Despite being among the team’s leaders, and thus exempt from the role of domestique, he achieved not had any notable achievements. The most notable thing Cioni did at Liquigas was second place in stage 4 of the 2005 Giro d’Italia, third place in the 2005 Italian National time trial championships and sixth overall in the 2006 Tour de Romandie. In 2007 Cioni was a part of his new team, the Belgian ProTour team Predictor-Lotto. His first win as part of this team came when he took the first stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia, outsprinting his breakaway partner Anton Luengo.
He lives with his family in Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany, with his wife. In 2004 Cioni received his degree from his school, the European School of Economics with an honors qualification from the field of International Business with specialisation in sports Management.

Cioni started his career as an elite mountain bike racer when he was of 19. He was rewarded by winning the Italian Winter Championship and second place in each of the Italian Cup and Italian Championships. Chosen as a representative of Italy during the World Championships, Cioni finished in tenth place. Cioni had similar results throughout his mountain bike racing career, with a number of top five places in World Cup events including second at St. Wendel in 1996. Cioni also did Cyclo-cross at the close of the nineties.
The year 2000 was the time that Cioni got selected to the Mapei-Quick-Step team. The team included other athletes like Filippo Pozzato Fabian Cancellara, Michael Rogers and Charlie Wegelius. Cioni’s goal was to use the experience gained on the road to aid his mountain bike career, with the intention of representing Italy during the 2000 Summer Olympics. But, he wasn’t chosen to compete in his participation in the Olympics which was the time that Cioni made the decision to focus in road race. In his first race, Cioni won a stage of the Tour of Slovenia and was second in an event in the Tour de Normandie. He also won his very first Vuelta a Espana. It was in 2001 that Cioni was the winner of his very first stage race that was that of the Vuelta Minho in Portugal. Cioni relocated into Fassa Bortolo in 2003, in which he served as a domestique to Alessandro Petacchi. While Petacchi was a success that season, Cioni had no notable outcomes.
In 2011 he announced his retirement from racing, and moved into a public relations role with his final pro team, Team Sky. He was also appointed as a member of the inaugural UCI Athletes’ Commission in 2011. He originally served as a business manager with the team, combining the role with work as a press officer. He switched roles and became one of the team’s directeurs sportifs in 2014.
