After the publication of a poem via Facebook, Tatour was investigated and convicted in the year 2018 in the Israeli justice system in the Israeli court for “inciting violence” and “supporting a terrorist organisation”, being released in September 2018. In May of 2019 her conviction on the poem was overturned , however her conviction for the other posts on social media was confirmed.
In May The Nazareth District Court reversed her conviction in the case of the poem, but not the convictions related to other posts on social media. The court found that the poem didn’t “involve unequivocal remarks that would provide the basis for a direct call to carry out acts”. The court pointed out that Tatour was well-known as poet, and that “freedom of expression is accorded added weight when it also involves freedom of artistic and creative [expression]”.
She was found guilty of a misdemeanor on the 3rd May, 2018 and on July 31, 2018 she was sentenced for five months’ prison. She was released on Septemberof 2018.

In October of 2015, Tatour published a poem on YouTube and Facebook with the title “Qawem Ya Shaabi Qawemahum” (“Resist my people, fight them”) The poems were used as the soundtrack for images of Palestinians engaged in violent battles with Israeli soldiers. The incident led to her detention and indictment on charges of inciting violence as well as for supporting an organization that is terrorist. The full interpretation of the verse written by a police officer is included as part of the document indicting her. The remainder of the indictment is related to the following three Facebook posts: (i) the picture of Israa Abed, a woman from Nazareth who was laid on the floor of the bus station central in Afula after she was killed by Israeli guards and soldiers; (ii) a profile photo featuring in the Arabic text “Ana Al-Shahid Al- Jay” (“I am the next martyr”) as well as (iii) the post that cites the demand of Islamic Jihad for Intifada in the West Bank and calling for Intifada in the green line that is for Al-Aqsa Mosque. According to BBC, “the poet’s case has become a cause celebre for free speech advocates and has drawn attention to a recent rise in Israeli arrests – of Israeli Arabs and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank – accused of incitement or planning attacks online” The PEN American Center condemned her sentence and arrest in 2016 and organized letters-writing campaigns for her after her conviction in May 2018, declared that the verdict “relies on a wanton mischaracterization of her work and is an unacceptable attack on freedom of expression in Israel”. The conviction was repudiated in the eyes of Jewish Voice for Peace.
In 2019, she received the Oxfam Novib/PEN Award for Freedom of Expression.
