When he was in high school in 1986, he was the winner of the student-drawing contest. In his Senior Year during his time at Doyle High School (now South- Doyle High School) in Knoxville, Conley was voted the ‘Most Talented’ of students who graduated. Conley was part of Amherst College’s A Cappella group known as the Zumbyes.

The comics syndicate United Media agreed in 1999 to air Conley’s new comic Get Fuzzy about an anthropomorphic cat named Bucky and a dog, Satchel living with their sole male owner, Rob Wilco, which was released on September 6th the 6th of September, 1999. The inspiration for the character of Bucky came from an acquaintance’s Siamese cat. The daily episodes on Get Fuzzy ended in 2013 and were replaced with repeats.
