Danyel Smith (born June 23 in 1965) is an American magazine editor and journalist. Smith is a 2014 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. She is also working on an account of the African-American females who have played a role working in the field of pop. Smith was also the editor for Billboard in addition to being the initial editor to be African-American in the magazine. She is also an ex-chief content officer at Vibe Media Group and former editor-in-chief of Vibe and vibe.com. She was the first African- American editor and the first female editor at Vibe.

She joined the Vibe magazine in 1994. was appointed the music editor for the then Quincy Jones’ new Vibe magazine. A year later, Smith was awarded the National Arts Journalism Program fellowship at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Following her time at Evanston, Illinois, she was appointed editor-in-chief of Vibe in 1997. Within two months, Smith increased Vibe’s readership from 500 to 750,000+ readers. Then, in 1999 she left Vibe and was hired by Time Inc. as an editor-at-large. There , she wrote and advised for magazines like Time, Entertainment Weekly and InStyle.

In 2006, Smith returned to run Vibe Magazine, responsible for the digital as well as the paper platforms. Smith’s cover profile of Keyshia Cole was featured in Da Capo Press’s Best Music Writing 2008. After three years, Smith had a short stint at The Washington Post’ s African-American political site, The Root, before returning to the music industry publication Billboard as editor. In 2012, she resigned to write a history of African-American women in pop music. In 2015, HRDCVR a hardcover culture magazine created by diverse teams for a diverse world founded by Smith and husband Elliott Wilson was released. In addition to HRDCVR, Smith and her husband began a podcast on iTunes called, Relationship Goals in which they talk about pop culture, hip hop music and how they make their relationship work.

In 2016, Smith was named the culture editor of ESPN’s newest venture called, The Undefeated.

Smith began the career path in 1989, working as an independent writer, columnist , and critique within The San Francisco Bay Area at The San Francisco Bay Guardian and The East Bay Express. From 1990 until 1991, she was the music editor at SF Weekly. In the year 1992 Smith worked as a freelance an editor with Spin magazine, where she created a pop-culture/music column titled “Dreaming America”. When 1993 came around, Smith relocated into New York to become the Rhythm and blues editor at Billboard magazine. In 1993 she also reviewed live shows as well as recorded songs in The New York Times.

While working on her second novel, Bliss, Smith was on the guest faculty at Saint Mary’s College of California. Smith was also a writer-in-residence at Skidmore College.
